Welcome to www.birdkeeper.dk!
Let me introduce myself.
My name is Jorgen Petersen. I live near a very small village, Ordrup, between the towns of Holbæk and Ringsted in the middle of the island of Zealand in Denmark.
Since I was a little boy, I have kept and bred parrots. The essence of my collection have always been Lovebirds (genus Agapornis), but also a variety of other parrots and parakeets. It is
the knowledge and experience from here, I would like to convey along with information about other interesting species that I have not yet had, but am greatly interested in.
website is a non-commercial hobby page, which provides knowledge and share experiences about the keeping and breeding of parrots (belonging to the order Psittaciformes) in a protected environment (i.e. captivity).
The aim is, based on the birds' natural living conditions,
• that we together can become better equipped
to create the best possible environment for our parrots,
• to encourage birdkeepers to focus our efforts for the conservation of purely breed parrot species through
systematic breeding and thus ensure the birds' future in their protected environment, as it is no longer always possible to import parrots from their countries of origin.
more we know about the different species habitats and behaviors in nature, the better we will be able to meet the birds' needs in a protected environment. This is the reason why I have put a particular emphasis on describing the birds' habitat and behavior
and status in the wild.
The site does not give instructions on the caring for alone sitting, tame domestic birds as parrots are social creatures that live in the wild, either in pairs
or in groups. In addition, commercial hand rearing of parrots in captivity have been discouraged by the Danish National Animal Ethics Council and has already been provisionally banned by law in some foresighting European countries.
