Welcome to www.birdkeeper.dk!
Let me introduce myself.
My name is Jorgen Petersen. I live near a very small village, Ordrup, between the towns of Holbæk and Ringsted in the middle of the island of Zealand in Denmark.
Since I was a little boy, I have kept and bred parrots. The essence of my collection have always been Lovebirds (genus Agapornis), but also a variety of other parrots and parakeets. It is
the knowledge and experience from here, I would like to convey along with information about other interesting species that I have not yet had, but am greatly interested in.
website is a non-commercial hobby page, which provides knowledge and share experiences about the keeping and breeding of parrots (belonging to the order Psittaciformes) in a protected environment (i.e. captivity).
The aim is, based on the birds' natural living conditions,
• that we together can become better equipped
to create the best possible environment for our parrots,
• to encourage birdkeepers to focus our efforts for the conservation of purely breed parrot species through
systematic breeding and thus ensure the birds' future in their protected environment, as it is no longer always possible to import parrots from their countries of origin.
more we know about the different species habitats and behaviors in nature, the better we will be able to meet the birds' needs in a protected environment. This is the reason why I have put a particular emphasis on describing the birds' habitat and behavior
and status in the wild.
The site does not give instructions on the caring for alone sitting, tame domestic birds as parrots are social creatures that live in the wild,
either in pairs or in groups. In addition, commercial hand rearing of parrots in captivity have been discouraged by the Danish National Animal Ethics Council and has already been provisionally banned by law in some foresighting European countries.
Since inception, www.birdkeeper.dk
has been an overwhelming success, averaging over 1,500 entries each week from interested readers.
The articles present both in-depth descriptions of selected parrot
species, and issues of more general importance for birdkeepers.
You will find articles about some of the parrot species that I either have - or have had - or maybe
just have a particular interest in. This includes articles on all species in the African Lovebird genus (Agapornis) and a couple of Australian parakeet generas, namely the Bluebonnet parakeets (Northiella)
and the Swift Parrot (Lathamus). In addition, I have also published an extensive series of articles concerning the Electus Parrot genus (Eclectus). Through year 2012, I have every month presented an in-depth
portrait of a selected parrot species under the heading “Månedens fugl 2012” (“This Month’s bird"). This approach is now replaced by the “Månedens foto” ("Photo of the Month"), where a photo of a selected parrot
species, is supported by a mini portrait. General topics include articles on such as health, building of aviaries and good advices on the purchase of parrots. The subject color mutations are only treated to a limited extent.
Under the tab "Til salg" (“For sale”) you can sometimes find some of the birds, that I offer for sale, including youngsters of my own bred.
The website is built up successively as what time allows, and every now and then.
Unfortunately, I do not have time to translate
the entire website into English, but if you have specific questions, etc., please feel free to send me an e-mail at firstname.lastname@example.org.
